To the point that rather than comply, she chose to go to jail, where she currently sits in contempt of court.

And of course when someone uses their religion as a shield to hide their bigotry, there are politicians rushing to her defense as a way to elevate their status in the presidential campaign– Mike Huckabee has started the #ImWithKim hashtag, and Ted Cruz has said he?“unequivocally” supports her right to use her government position to oppress gays per her religion.

What none of these people will acknowledge is that they would not support some government official’s right to impose their religious rules on others if that official had a different religion.?

And among all this steps Rep. Steve King, normally only known for his racist xenophobia. ?He tweeted this:

In 1963, we should not have honored SCOTUS decision to creat a wall of separation between prayer & school. Kim Davis for Rosa Parks Award.
— Steve King (@SteveKingIA) September 5, 2015

There’s really two awful things here:

That Kim Davis is like Rosa Parks

That people should have defied the Supreme Court when it ruled against prayer in public schools

These are both offensive. Prayer in public schools should be offensive to everyone, because if it’s not your prayer, then you wouldn’t want some teacher forcing your kid to say it. To imagine that school prayer is OK is to think that your religion will always be the one in charge. And to not care that others have a different religion than you.

But it’s the Rosa Parks comment that really bothers me. Bigots of all sorts try to appropriate the righteousness of the Civil Rights movement to their pet causes, but there is always some disconnect which suggests that they don’t get why the Civil Rights protesters are heroes.

I saw the other day that people on Twitter were making this Rosa Parks/Kim Davis comparison, but it wasn’t until this weekend that I saw a public figure like Rep. Steve King making it. And it’s offensive because it switches the oppressor and victim:

Rosa Parks was jailed for DEMANDING the same rights white people enjoyed.
Kim Davis was jailed for DENYING gay people the rights she herself enjoys.

Kim Davis is not the Rosa Parks of gay marriage, she’s the person who enforced the rule against Rosa Parks sitting in the front of that bus. But Steve King doesn’t care about that– the only oppression he can see is of people like him, not others. And for that, he is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Steve King’s second time as Asshole of the Day. A few months back it was CeeLo who didn’t get this, and now it’s a Utah state legislator.

Rep. Brian Greene is trying keep a law in Utah from defining sex with an unconscious person as being rape:

If an individual has sex with their wife while she is unconscious … a prosecutor could then charge that spouse with rape, theoretically,“ said Rep. Brian Greene, R-Pleasant Grove. "That makes sense in a first date scenario, but to me, not where people have a history of years of sexual activity.”
…
Green later made clear that while he did not support having sex with unconscious people, he questions whether sex with an unconscious person was “rape in every instance — dependent only upon the actor’s knowledge that the individual is unconscious. That’s the question. That’s what I struggle with.”

Frankly I don’t even know how it matters whether the rapist is aware of whether the person is unconscious– if the person you’re having sex with is unconscious and you can’t be bothered to notice, then that’s rape too in my book.

But back to his main assertion that in a marriage that it could be OK to have sex with an unconscious person and therefore not be rape. How could it possibly matter? So what if you’re married? It’s not like the marriage vows include a line about allowing sex while unconscious. Getting married doesn’t mean a lifetime of rape.

But Rep. Greene, I guess he doesn’t care about wives consenting to sex. Of course it would turn out that he was a regular sexist homophobe like so many others, but at the time his bigotry wasn’t out in front.

It is now. For the last few years he’s shown his nasty side, particularly when it comes to denying gays the same marriage rights he himself enjoys. And here’s the latest example:

Huckabee said that for him, same sex marriage is a religious issue.

“This is not just a political issue. It is a biblical issue. And as a biblical issue, unless I get a new version of the scriptures, it’s really not my place to say, ‘Okay, I’m just going to evolve.’ It’s like asking somebody who’s Jewish to start serving bacon-wrapped-shrimp in their deli. … or asking a Muslim to serve up something that is offensive to him or to have dogs in his backyard,” he said. “We’re so sensitive to make sure we don’t offend certain religions, but then we act like Christians can’t have the convictions that they’ve had for over 2,000 years.”

Everyone knows Jews don’t eat pork, and we would never make them eat it. But this analogy of Huckabee’s is way off.?

Asking a Christian baker to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple is not the same as making a Jew serve pork. Pork is against the Jewish religion, but cake is not against Christianity.

For Huckabee’s analogy to work, you’d have to be forcing the Christian baker to be having gay sex in his bakery, or forcing him to allow the customer to have gay sex there. No one is making them do that, or even suggesting it.

And don’t tell me it’s about them not serving people who sin. Baker’s don’t ask if a cake will be brought home and eaten by an unmarried couple before they have sex, which is also a sin. Mike Huckabee never once suggested that a Christian baker not serve a straight person who may have committed a grave sin, or intended to. Huckabee only wants Christians to be able to discriminate against gays.
