Jeb Bush, Asshole of the Day for September 17, 2015

During last night’s Republican debate, Jeb Bush claimed that Obama created ISIS by withdrawing troops, and then under criticism from Trump, he defiantly proclaimed his brother George W. Bush “kept us safe.”

And today he didn’t walk away from that ridiculous statement– instead he doubled down on Twitter:

Boy, he’s really proud of this one. And it sounds great if you can forget

  • 9/11 in which thousands died on American soil. Jeb even puts 9/11 in the photo in tweet. That happened on his brother’s watch. And don’t tell me you blame that one on Clinton, but then blame Obama for the troop withdrawal that his brother signed in 2008. You could make an argument that Clinton is to blame for 9/11 or that Obama is to blame for the troop withdrawal, but you can’t pretend that George W. Bush isn’t responsible for either.
  • The Iraq War, which also led to the deaths and wounding of thousands of American.s
  • Letting North Korea develop nuclear weapons
  • All the Americans who were left to die in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
  • The botched Iraq occupation which let terrorists thrive in new country
  • Letting Iran start a nuclear program
  • And of course he never caught Bin Laden

So no, his brother did not keep us safe. And for saying he did, proudly, all pleased with himself, Jeb Bush is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Jeb Bush’s second time as Asshole of the Day. In the first he also blamed something his brother did on Obama.

Last year Republicans made 9/11 about Benghazi. We showed how they raised it above what happened in New York, DC, and Pennsylvania in 2001 in this post. Let us know if they pull that crap again.

Ben Carson, Asshole of the Day for June 5, 2014

by TeaPartyCat ()

Dr. Ben Carson is thinking about running for president, and so he must get his name out there and make sure people know where he stands on things. And being a former brain surgeon, of course conservatives are eager to hear him bash Obamacare. And he obliges often– last year he claimed that Obamacare is worse than slavery.

Now since most people don’t watch Fox News, they don’t think of a mandate to buy private health insurance as being the same as an entire people taken from their homes, having the fruits of their labor stolen from them, having their families broken up and sold off for profit, and being beaten and murdered for fun and profit. So naturally people are going to ask why Dr. Carson thinks this. A reporter for the Daily Beast asked him about this, and just listen to what he said next:

He claimed that Obamacare has been even more damaging to the United States than the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

“You said Obamacare was the worst thing since slavery. Why do you think it was worse than 9/11?” I asked him.

“Because 9/11 is an isolated incident,” he answered.

And then the reporter got a chance to press and get clarification:

Me: “Who do you think caused families more pain—Obamacare or Osama bin Laden?”

Carson: “Things that are isolated issues as opposed to things that fundamentally change the United States of America and shift power from the people to the government. That is a huge shift.”

Me: “Right. But what do you think caused specific families more pain—Obamacare or Osama?”

Carson: “You have to take a long-term look at something that fundamentally changes the power structure of America. You have to be someone who reads. Who is well-read. I want you to go back tonight and pull out what Saul Alinsky says about health care under the control of the government.”

He’s actually wrong in both directions here:

  1. He thinks Obamacare hurt more people than 9/11
  2. He thinks 9/11 didn’t “fundamentally changes the power structure of America”

They’re both ridiculous, so let’s take them separately:

Almost 3000 people died on 9/11, but so far no deaths attributable to Obamacare. Neither Dr. Carson nor any of barking idiots on Fox News or in Congress has produced evidence of even a single death due to Obamacare. Sure, they promise “death panels” and a lot of other nonsense, but it’s all talk. Real people died on 9/11. Lot’s of them. There’s plenty of footage; I’ll bet he’s seen it.

9/11 wasn’t just an isolated incident that changed nothing. It changed lots of things. Because of 9/11 George W. Bush started wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. We were in Iraq for almost 9 years (2003-11), and we’re still in Afghanistan– it is our country’s longest war. It changed airport security. It meant the hardening of many, many sites in the US. And all these things cost trillions of dollars. Trillions of dollars that have yet to be paid.

9/11 made fundamental changes to the power structure in America. Because of 9/11, all of the intelligence and enforcement divisions of the federal government, foreign and domestic, were reorganized under Homeland Security. Prior to that there was very little if any sharing between departments, now there’s lots. Because of 9/11 the government began collecting large amounts of data and communications, not only of foreign threats, but of many and possibly all Americans. Things have changed. Fundamentally.

Maybe someday you’ll be able to claim that Obamacare has been worse, but it hasn’t been so far, and no amount of bluster and fear-mongering can change that.

So, for claiming that Obamacare has damaged America more than 9/11, Dr. Ben Carson is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Ben Carson’s second time as Asshole of the Day. His previous win was for claiming that the same marriage rights he himself enjoys are “extra rights” that gays are not entitled to.

Dick Cheney, Asshole of the Day for May 22, 2014

by TeaPartyCat ()

Benghazi keeps draggin out as the GOP keeps alleging scandal even though they never find one. They keep asking accusatory questions, ignoring how those very questions were answered in the many previous hearings they insisted on holding. It’s very tiresome and unfortunately it’s not going away.

And of course it’s tinged with hypocrisy. The very GOP who keeps harping on 4 Americans who died refuses to put it in perspective of previous American foreign service losses under Reagan, Bush, Clinton or Bush. They only care about these 4 who died on Obama and Hillary’s watch. I even satirized this last summer by pretending that Obama was somehow responsible for all the deaths under Bush and even the 241 Marines in Beruit that happened under Reagan. Why, I asked, did no one hold Obama responsible for the death of those Marines in 1983?

But the hypocrites of the GOP in Congress who hold hearings on Benghazi but gave a pass to Republicans in the Bush administration who were in charge when more people died and more frequently doesn’t really compare to Dick Cheney claiming Hillary is responsible when he never held himself responsible:

During a Sunday interview on Fox News, host Chris Wallace asked Cheney if Clinton “did anything wrong,” and if she should be “held responsible for the events surrounding that attack.”

“She was secretary of state at the time that it happened,” Cheney opined. “She was one of the first in Washington to know about it. I think she clearly bears responsibility for whatever the State Department did or didn’t do with respect to that crisis.”

“I do think it’s a major issue,” he added. “I don’t think we’ve heard the last of it yet, and I expect that she will be held accountable during the course of the campaign.”

Got it. It happened on her watch, so she’s responsible.

Can anyone remind me of any time when Dick Cheney held himself or George W. Bush or anyone in their administration responsible for the loss of American lives– diplomatic personnel or citizens? I don’t remember any acknowledgement over 9/11. Or any of the other attacks that happened overseas. Anything?

Buehler?

Nope. In Dick Cheney’s world, he did all he could and no one could have done more so he wasn’t responsible. But these Democrats? Well, clearly they are responsible. Incredible!

So, for blaming Hillary for an attack on diplomatic personnel that happened while she was Secretary of State but never considering himself or George W. Bush or Colin Powell or Condoleezza Rice responsible for the numerous attacks that happened on their watch, Dick Cheney is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Dick Cheney’s second time as Asshole of the Day. His previous win was for criticizing Obama for spending “money on Food Stamps than on a strong military or support for our troops”.

Is Donald Rumsfeld Asshole of the Day (again)?

image

Is Donald Rumsfeld asshole of the day for claiming no one in the Bush administration ever claimed Saddam Hussein was involved in 9/11 when he helped spread that lie?

In the interview below, Morris asked Rumsfeld whether the Bush administration had worked particularly hard to forge an erroneous connection between Hussein and the 9/11 attacks.

“Oh, I don’t think so,” Rumsfeld said. “It was very clear that the direct planning for 9/11 was done by Osama bin Laden’s people, al Qaeda, and in Afghanistan. I don’t think the American people were confused about that.”

“In 2003, in a Washington Post poll,” said Morris, “Sixty-nine percent say that they believe that it is likely that the Iraqi leader was personally involved in the attacks carried out by Al-Qaeda.”

Rumsfeld contended that to his memory, no administration official “said anything like that. Nor do I recall anyone believing that.”

Morris rolled a video clip from Feb. 4, 2003, in which then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was asked by a reporter to respond to Hussein’s contention that he had no weapons of mass destruction nor any relationship with Al-Qaeda.

More, including video, over at Raw Story

And even if you don’t quote Rumsfeld, there’s plenty more like this from Cheney:

The former vice president said in 2004 that the evidence was “overwhelming” that al Qaeda had a relationship with Hussein’s regime in Iraq, and that media reports suggesting that the commission investigating the 9/11 attacks reached a contradictory conclusion were “irresponsible.”

“There clearly was a relationship. It’s been testified to. The evidence is overwhelming,” Cheney said at the time.

“It goes back to the early ‘90s. It involves a whole series of contacts, high-level contacts with Osama bin Laden and Iraqi intelligence officials.”

69% of people didn’t just connect Saddam Hussein to Al Qaeda and 9/11 on their own. They had help. Help from the Bush administration that was trying to sell an unrelated war, and before they had finished the war in Afghanistan, the country that actually harbored and helped Al Qaeda before 9/11.

Is Chris Christie Asshole of the Day (again)?

image

Is Chris Christie asshole of the day for giving away pieces of 9/11 rubble to his cronies?

Gov. Chris Christie ® reportedly gave away pieces of metal salvaged from the wreckage of the World Trade Center as gifts to his political allies. According to theNew York Times, the twisted chunks of metal were presented to a group of mayors who endorsed Christie ahead of his bid for re-election in 2013.

This is the world we live in– where Chris Christie can give away pieces of 9/11 and George Zimmerman can sign autographs at a gun show.

And people wondered why we started this site.

Is Alan Keyes Asshole of the Day?

image

Is Alan Keyes asshole of the day for saying Obama’s pot comments make him “like the terrorists who targeted the Towers in New York”?

Keyes claims liberal marijuana laws, along with the teaching of evolution, are attempts to “affect the moral judgment and character of the American people” and undermine “America’s liberty.”

“Much like the terrorists who targeted the Towers in New York, which symbolized America’s material commerce, these scornful elitists target the pillars of moral and spiritual commerce that uphold our political constitution,” he writes. “But when liberty’s pillars fail, the smoke that rises from their crater will signify the fatal triumph of our stupefaction, courtesy of those, like Obama, who are working hard to make us too stupid to be free.”

http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/keyes-obamas-pot-comments-make-him-911-hijackers

Legalized pot and teaching evolution undermine liberty? Obama is “working hard to make us too stupid to be free”?

Isn’t Alan Keyes worried that by bringing up the towers in New York with regard to 9/11 that he might run afoul of the GOP which now believes that the deaths of 4 people in an unstable country is much, much worse than what happened at Ground Zero?

Not naming an Asshole of the Day today.

Instead, behold all these assholes trying to make 9/11 about something else for political gain: /478/post/60935867190/9-11-is-about-the-3-000-people-who-died-at-ground-zero

When I put the post up this morning, I invited people to find others like Lindsey Graham who were putting the loss of 4 people in Benghazi at equal or greater importance than what happened at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania in 2001. And boy were there a lot. I added them as they came in during the day. For a party that spent so many years politicizing 9/11/2001 to turn their backs like that is just despicable.

Assholes playing to a base of assholes.

Assholes every one.

And so it was impossible to pick one who stood out above the rest.

9/11 is about the 3,000 people who died at Ground Zero and the Pentagon

image

by TeaPartyCat

And not the 4 people who died in Benghazi. Sure, Benghazi was a tragic loss of life, but anyone who elevates Benghazi to equal or higher status than the 3,000 people who died on September 11, 2001 is an asshole. Partisan, mean, cynical assholes.

I have satirized this impulse of the hyper-partisan over on Wink Progress with a post called The GOP Remembers 9/11. Since I posted it, Sen. Lindsey Graham tweeted this:

Yeah. He said that. After 7 years under George W. Bush browbeating the country to agree to whatever they did in the name of 9/11, now they ignore it in favor of the deaths of 4 people who died on Obama’s watch. None of their arguments work– more people died in US diplomatic missions under George W. Bush than under Obama, George W. Bush was given clear intelligence but did nothing and went on vacation, and most of all the GOP never, ever tried to hold Bush accountable for that failure. And let’s not forget how after Bush was out of office, the GOP tried to block 9/11 first responders from getting health benefits until they were shamed into it

So I’m asking you, if you see any GOP leader today who tweets or says something implying that what happened in Benghazi  on 9/11/2012 is equal to or worse than what happened in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania on 9/11/2001, put a link to it in the comments below, so I can call them out here on Asshole of the Day, as well as adding them to the satire piece to point out how the satire is sadly too close to what the GOP actually says.

UPDATES:

Minnesota GOP mentions 4 dead in Benghazi, but no number for 2001:
