Mike Huckabee, Asshole of the Day for September 8, 2015

Kim Davis was released from jail today, which almost seemed like a disappointment to Mike Huckabee who had gone to Kentucky to throw a rally in her behalf. Having her walk out of jail ruins the optics of the boot of government on the throat of the pious martyr he was hoping for.

But he still found a way to keep the fight going after the judge said that Ms. Davis can’t interfere with the issuance of gay marriage licenses in her county. Huckabee said he would gladly go to jail:

“I have a message for the judge,” Huckabee proclaimed, “and I say this with all my heart: If this judge believes that somebody must be put in jail because a person is willing to stand on the biblical definition of marriage … Let Kim go, but if you have to put someone in jail, I volunteer to go. Let me go. Lock me up if you think that’s how freedom is best served.”

“I am willing to spend the next eight years in the White House leading this country,” he thundered, “but I want you to know, I’m willing to spend the next eight years in jail but I’m not willing to spend one day under the tyranny of people who believe they can take our freedom and conscience away!”

Of course Gov. Huckabee knows that’s not how it works. We don’t let innocent people serve jail time on behalf of the guilty, except of course for those wrongfully arrested or convicted. But by offering he’s trying to get some of her martyr cred to rub off on him and maybe breathe some life into his presidential campaign that is going nowhere.

It does of course beg the question as to what  a President Huckabee would do about gay marriage when he’s in the White House? Would he just ignore the Supreme Court decision? Mike Huckabee is not an idiot– he knows that the Supreme Court is the ultimate arbiter of the law in this country. There is no clause for the law to be whatever the government official claims God told them to do.

And furthermore, Kim Davis doesn’t have to be issuing marriage licenses. There are plenty other jobs she could do that won’t offend her religious sensibility– she is not forced to do this one. It’s a free country. The judge is compelling her to issue marriage licenses to gays as long as she continues to do the job of issuing marriage licenses, but the judge is not compelling her to keep that job. Mike Huckabee hasn’t spent a minute on that one.

So, for pretending that he would go to jail in her place, and trying to steal Kim Davis’ martyrdom for himself– a martyrdom that she could avoid by just quitting her job– Mike Huckabee is the Asshole of the Day.

Mike Huckabee, Asshole of the Day for February 9, 2015

Last week President Obama spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast and continued his assertion, stated often, that ISIS and other Islamic terrorists do not represent their entire religion, and that evil done in the name of Islam is no different than evil that has been done in the name of Christianity, not just throughout world history, but specifically American history with regards to slavery and Jim Crow. Here’s what the president said:

Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.

The facts of Christianity being used in service of those evils is 100% accurate, as Ta-Nehisi Coates goes at length to show.

But apparently bringing up facts is unforgivable. And, while many conservatives responded with crazy talk, it’s Mike Huckabee we’re highlighting today, for his was particularly ugly and he is running for president. Here’s Huckabee’s response:

“Everything he does is against what Christians stand for, and he’s against the Jews in Israel,” he said on “Fox and Friends.” “The one group of people that can know they have his undying, unfailing support would be the Muslim community. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the radical Muslim community or the more moderate Muslim community.”

Huckabee makes two assertions, both objectionable. So let’s take them in order:

#1 “Everything he does is against what Christians stand for.”

So which one of these things that Christians stand for does Obama act against?

  • Helping the poor?
  • Treating others the way he would like to be treated?

Or is it that in Mike Huckabee’s very narrow view of his own religion all that Christians stand for is persecuting gays and oppressing women?

Please recall that Obama is a professed Christian, and that during the 2008 election, members of Mike Huckabee’s party tried to make it unacceptable that Obama attended the Christian church run by Rev. Wright. Ring a bell?

#2 “The one group of people that can know they have his undying, unfailing support would be the Muslim community.”

Look, during his presidency Obama

  • Prioritized killing Bin Laden
  • Increased drone attacks against Islamic terrorists
  • Began bombing ISIS
  • Negotiated to keep Iran from getting nuclear weapons

That doesn’t sound like undying and unfailing support to me.

But Mike Huckabee doesn’t care about that. He expects the president of a constitutionally secular country will unconditionally put Christians above all others, and by Christians, those who hold the narrow view of the faith that Mike Huckabee has.

And even more than that, Mike Huckabee knows that this line of attack plays to the portion of American racists who believe Obama to be a secret Muslim. And for that, Mike Huckabee is the Asshole of the Day.

Mike Huckabee, Asshole of the Day for February 2, 2015

When he ran for president in 2007-08, Mike Huckabee had a nice guy image. Of course it would turn out that he was a regular sexist homophobe like so many others, but at the time his bigotry wasn’t out in front.

It is now. For the last few years he’s shown his nasty side, particularly when it comes to denying gays the same marriage rights he himself enjoys. And here’s the latest example:

Huckabee said that for him, same sex marriage is a religious issue.
“This is not just a political issue. It is a biblical issue. And as a biblical issue, unless I get a new version of the scriptures, it’s really not my place to say, ‘Okay, I’m just going to evolve.’ It’s like asking somebody who’s Jewish to start serving bacon-wrapped-shrimp in their deli. … or asking a Muslim to serve up something that is offensive to him or to have dogs in his backyard,” he said. “We’re so sensitive to make sure we don’t offend certain religions, but then we act like Christians can’t have the convictions that they’ve had for over 2,000 years.”

Everyone knows Jews don’t eat pork, and we would never make them eat it. But this analogy of Huckabee’s is way off.

Asking a Christian baker to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple is not the same as making a Jew serve pork. Pork is against the Jewish religion, but cake is not against Christianity.

For Huckabee’s analogy to work, you’d have to be forcing the Christian baker to be having gay sex in his bakery, or forcing him to allow the customer to have gay sex there. No one is making them do that, or even suggesting it.

And don’t tell me it’s about them not serving people who sin. Baker’s don’t ask if a cake will be brought home and eaten by an unmarried couple before they have sex, which is also a sin. Mike Huckabee never once suggested that a Christian baker not serve a straight person who may have committed a grave sin, or intended to. Huckabee only wants Christians to be able to discriminate against gays. And for that, he is the Asshole of the Day.

Is Mike Huckabee Asshole of the Day (again)?

image

Is Mike Huckabee asshole of the day for saying Obama is lying about being a Christian?

Describing his own opposition to equal marriage rights, Huckabee explained, “The position that I hold is the position that Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden held in 2008. Barack Obama held it until 2012.” “And my question that I would love to pose to the president is this: Mr. President, please explain that when you said in 2008 at the Saddleback Church forum that you stood for traditional marriage and you did so because you were a Christian and because it’s what the Bible taught, please answer: Were you lying then, are you lying now, or did the Bible get rewritten?”

More at Think Progress

Actually it’s not clear what Huckabee is accusing Obama of lying about– being a Christian or supporting gay marriage.

But in any event, Huckabee is trying to gotcha Obama. You know, that thing Sarah Palin hates so much. He’s trying to say Obama supported Huckabee’s position then, so Obama is either lying or a flip-flopper, as though flip-flopping were the worst thing ever.

Except there’s a few problems with what Huckabee is doing.

1. Flip-flopping may have been fatal to Kerry in 2004, but that was before Bush became the most hated and least respected president since Nixon. You see, Bush made a virtue out of never changing his mind. Except he turned out to be wrong a lot, and stuck with his wrongness way past the point of reason. So trying to tag someone as a flip-flopper isn’t what it used to be.

2. People can change their mind. Outside of the base of homophobes that Huckabee is trying to play to, the majority of Americans support gay marriage and changed their mind just as President Obama did. And those people don’t feel like flip-floppers or liars for supporting same-sex marriage now having possibly voted against it in 2004 or 2008. No, they feel like they’ve done the right thing after their eyes were open.

3. Obama was for civil unions, but not for marriage. It was about the word marriage, not about conferring rights to gay couples in committed relationships. And since 2008 people have learned that civil unions have many less rights than marriage, and that matters. We want gays to have the same rights as all other adults do.

It’s inaccurate for Huckabee to act like his position and Obama’s in 2008 was the same on this issue. Huckabee actively campaigned against gay marriage. Huckabee did not, to my knowledge, ever support civil unions for gay couples. Obama supported civil unions and while he said he was against gay marriage, he didn’t campaign on it or in any way push for Prop 8.

Mike Huckabee, Asshole of the Day for April 13, 2014

by TeaPartyCat ()

For the last 5 years there has been a neverending pattern of conservatives clutching their pearls and crying tyranny. Often it can be something like spying on American citizens and they cry out that Obama has destroyed American freedom, even though, as in the case of Sean Hannity, the program started under Bush and Hannity was a very vocal supporter of the program under Bush.

But invocations of tyranny are usually limited to past tyrants like Stalin or Hitler, not current ones. And for good reason– current tyrants still continue to do horrible things that would make the speaker look ridiculous. Apparently Mike Huckabee hasn’t figured this part out though, since he’s now on record comparing the US to North Korea:

“I’m beginning to think theres more freedom in North Korea sometimes than there is in the United States.”

The context for this quote is from going to the airport and having to deal with the TSA security. Here’s more:

“When I go to the airport, I have to get in the surrender position, people put hands all over me, and I have to provide photo ID and a couple of different forms and prove that I really am not going to terrorize the airplane – but if I want to go vote I don’t need a thing,“ he continued, according to MSNBC.

I don’t know which one is more ridiculous– that Mike Huckabee thinks that TSA patdowns are worse than Kim Jong Un killing his uncle and all members of the uncle’s family or that Mike Huckabee is just now in 2014 noticing what happens at airports. Because the TSA and all its security theater is nothing new.

But the idea that you’d compare America under Obama to North Korea and find America wanting is just more proof that there is no pander that Mike Huckabee won’t do.

So, for pretending that the airport security that is relatively unchanged for the past decade is somehow proof of Obama’s tyranny, Mike Huckabee is the Asshole of the Day.

Is Mike Huckabee asshole of the day for blaming his homophobia on God?

A year ago as @teapartycat I mocked the way  Mike Huckabee tries to portray himself as a nice guy who doesn’t hate anyone while supporting laws that deny people the same rights he enjoys:

It wasn’t a real quote, but it’s what’s between the lines. It’s what’s behind his big Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, which was to appreciate Chick-fil-A for supporting the cause of denying gays the same rights to marriage that straight people have. If you can’t see how objectionable, just imagine if he held a Segregation Appreciation Day in 1963.

But it turns out I didn’t satirize Mike Huckabee, because now he’s pretty much said it:

“I’m not against anybody. I’m really not,” he said. “I’m not a hater. I’m not homophobic.”

“But … when people say, ‘Why don’t you just kind of get on the right side of history?’ I said, ’You’ve got to understand, this for me is not about the right side or the wrong side of history, this is the right side of the Bible, and unless God rewrites it, edits it, sends it down with his signature on it, it’s not my book to change,’” he added, as quoted by CNN.

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/mike-huckabee-im-not-homophobic

He’s said

  • I don’t hate gays
  • I want to deny gays rights because God doesn’t want gays to have rights

It’s just so wrong to put your hate on God.

And more than that, we’re talking about only a few lines in the Bible here that he feels are inviolable and the true will of God. I want to say, look, slavery was fine in the Bible– it’s all over the place, but not now. How can you say that slavery is wrong in 2014, even though God’s just fine with it in the Bible, but you can’t look past a few condemnations of homosexuality? Why do you think God is such a bigot?

Scott Walker says the GOP should avoid “taking the bait” on social issues

Gov. Scott Walker is a 3-time Asshole of the Day (so far). And now he’s said this:

In an interview with PostTV, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker ® said Republicans should avoid “taking the bait” on divisive social issues. The comments were in response to controversial remarks about birth control from former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee. Walker said while part of Huckabee’s comments that referred to a “woman’s libido” were taken out of context, in general, Republicans would be better served by focusing on their economic messages.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2014/01/26/gov-walker-to-gop-avoid-taking-the-bait-on-social-issues/

This recalls Walker’s first time being named Asshole of the Day, when he signed a bill restricting women’s right to control their own bodies, and he did it in secret. You can read the whole post, which covers how a similar bill in Texas led to widespread protests, and, hoping to avoid another ugly showdown like he had over taking rights from unions, he just did it in secret.

image

So now he’s saying not to take the bait on social issues? What does he mean? We’re guessing he just means keep oppressing women, but do it in secret.

Is Rand Paul Asshole of the Day (again)?

image

Is Rand Paul asshole of the day for saying women won the war on women because the women in his family are successful?

Paul said that the women in his family are incredibly successful, and don’t complain about their place in society.

“The women in my family are incredibly successful,” he said. “I don’t hear them saying, 'Oh woe is me, this terrible misogynist world.’”

The senator joked that he worries more about young men than about young women.

“I don’t see so much that women are downtrodden. I see women rising up and doing great things,” Paul said. “In fact I worry about our young men sometimes.”

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/rand-paul-women-won-war-on-women

So, let’s summarize: Rand Paul says there’s no war on women based on what he sees of the the women in his family.

And I’m sure he really listens and they’re completely open with him.

And that it’s statistically significant to compare the handful of women in his wealthy family and then generalize that to all women in America. Even the Unskewed Polls guy or the Romney campaign pollster might be able to do a little better than this.

Or maybe he’s an asshole for not caring that it’s not a representative sample, because then maybe he’d have to notice the plight of women, and listen to women, and see a world beyond himself and the racist, neo-Confederate assholes in his circle.

And I’m sure Mike Huckabee is grateful for this fine defense.

UPDATE: Here’s Asshole of the Day co-founder @TheDailyEdge with his take on Rand Paul’s ridiculous statement:

Mike Huckabee even bigger asshole than we thought on Friday

image

Mike Huckabee showed what an asshole he is last Thursday, with his rant about birth control and the female libido. In that speech he said

During his speech, Huckabee also likened Obamacare’s expanded contraception coverage to a sugar daddy. Democrats want women to think “they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of government,” he said. Republicans, by contrast, want to “empower them to be something other than victims of their gender.”

We named him Asshole of the Day for it, which he certainly deserved. But now it turns out he’s an even bigger asshole than we thought:

Bloggers from the Campaign for America’s Future, a progressive public policy group, discovered that Huckabee himself signed legislation in 2005 that required contraception coverage in Arkansas insurance policies … including policies for church-affiliated organizations such as hospitals and universities.

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/01/26/huckabee-was-for-mandatory-contraception-coverage-before-he-was-against-it/

So, let’s just return to his original statement and show what it would sound like if he were being honest about his own past:

Democrats AND MIKE HUCKABEE want women to think “they are helpless without Uncle Sugar AND MIKE HUCKABEE coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of government AND MIKE HUCKABEE,” he said. Republicans (EXCLUDING MIKE HUCKABEE), by contrast, want to “empower them to be something other than victims of their gender.”

Hypocrite? Liar? Hard to say which, but we’re certain he’s an asshole, just as we are certain there is a GOP War On Women.

Mike Huckabee, Asshole of the Day for January 24, 2014

by TeaPartyCat ()

Remember when people thought Mike Huckabee was a nice guy, and not some crazy extremist? All those appearances on the Daily Show, all genial and smiley. Civil. Well, it appears that ship has sailed:

During his speech, Huckabee also likened Obamacare’s expanded contraception coverage to a sugar daddy. Democrats want women to think “they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of government,” he said. Republicans, by contrast, want to “empower them to be something other than victims of their gender.”

How bad is it? Well, Rick Santorum says the comments were ill advised. Yes, Rick Santorum.

It’s a ridiculous statement by Huckabee. Remarkable in how it shows what Huckabee thinks about women, and how he tries to hide it. Here’s Ed Kilgore at Political Animal translating for us:

Let’s get this straight: Republicans are fighting for the empowerment of women by telling them Uncle Sugar should keep them from having abortions, using birth control methods that some religious leaders (unlike medical and scientific experts) have deemed “abortifacients,” and asking for equal pay as a right, not a request. A ban on abortion and curbs on birth control, moreover, empower women to control their libidos, which are clearly a threat to public order, not to mention Old Testament patriarchy.

Or, as Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo says:

So what this all boils down to is that Mike Huckabee is scared of female sexuality, which goes right along with his fear of homosexuality.

Oh, and a hypocrite too— someone pointed out to me on the Asshole of the Day Facebook page that Huckabee once jammed out with Ted Nugent. They performed Cat Scratch Fever (video), which we’re pretty sure has to do with female libido. But I guess that’s OK because, well, the 2nd Amendment and racism is important too.

And finally, he’s fundraising off it already:

Not only is former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee ® not apologizing for saying Democrats think women can’t control their reproductive system without the help of the government, he’s fundraising off those comments.

“I am apparently the worst conservative ever or at least the most annoying one according to the left wingers in Washington today,” Huckabee wrote in his regular MikeHuckabee.com email to supporters Thursday night. “My remarks to the RNC today were immediately jumped on and blown sky high by hand-wringing, card carrying liberals from coast to coast, some of them in the media.”

This follows the GOP pattern of

  1. Be an asshole.
  2. Fundraise off response by the non-asshole population claiming persecution.

Trent Franks did this with his rape comments. Remember this? He said, “the incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy is very low.” But 30,000 women get pregnant by rape each year, which most people would say isn’t very low. But it didn’t matter because within 24 hours he was already fundraising on it.

By contrast, Mike Huckabee only took 5 hours to start asking for donations. And, that is why Mike Huckabee is Asshole of the Day.

It is Mike Huckabee’s third time being named Asshole of the Day. Previous wins were for calling Lara Logan a hero for her Benghazi story AFTER the story had been completely discredited and saying Muslims come out of a mosque “like uncorked animals”.
