Rudy Giuliani, Asshole of the Day for February 19, 2015

Ever since police shootings and racist policing returned to the news last summer, Rudy Giuliani has injected himself into the stories to push his racist viewpoints.

We first called attention to this when he asserted that the black community was responsible for any and all violence and crime committed by any black person, a standard he certainly doesn’t hold white people to. We even highlighted Ta-Nehisi Coates well-deserved mocking of Giuliani’s argument.

Then a month later we highlighted how Giuliani blamed Obama and peaceful protesters of racist police shooting for the death of two policemen.

But Giuliani hasn’t stopped there. In a fundraiser for Scott Walker, Giuliani told the crowd:

“I do not believe, and I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America,” Giuliani said, as quoted by Politico. “He doesn’t love you. And he doesn’t love me. He wasn’t brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up through love of this country.

He later goes on to say: "What the hell? What’s wrong with this man that he can’t stand up and say there’s a part of Islam that’s sick?” This goes back to the recent nonsense over Obama pointing out that Christianity also has a history of extremist violence at the National Prayer Breakfast. And if you can’t see what’s wrong with that argument, here’s what Digby had to say:

I don’t know.  I guess for the same reason he doesn’t stand up and say that there’s part of Catholicism that’s sick. After all, the Catholic priesthood has been crawling with child molesters for decades. For all we know, centuries.  I’m going to take a guess that as a Catholic he doesn’t think it would be right to tar the vast majority of non-pedophile Catholics with the actions of those priests or define the religion itself as a pedophiliac belief system.

I think she does a good job of pointing out how Giuliani lumps together groups to take responsibility for the worst of their members, but then doesn’t apply the same responsibility to the groups that he is a member.

But back to Giuliani’s Obama doesn’t love America and wasn’t raised right argument, I think the real question is for Giuliani:

  • Loves America how, Rudy? Like you do– only the white parts? The love that blames every black person for the crimes of a few black people, a standard you don’t hold white people to?
  • Not brought up the way you were? To what– be racist? To trample people’s rights in the name of security?

Of course Giuliani isn’t going to answer questions like that. His statements are dog-whistles to his audience about how Obama isn’t like us, he’s an outsider. Obama is black, we get it. Never mind that Obama’s mother was every bit as white as Giuliani’s mother. Nope. Doesn’t matter to Giuliani. And for that, Giuliani is the Asshole of the Day.

UPDATE: Giuliani claims it’s not racist because Obama’s mother is white. Seriously:

“Some people thought it was racist — I thought that was a joke, since he was brought up by a white mother, a white grandfather, went to white schools, and most of this he learned from white people,” Mr. Giuliani said in the interview. “This isn’t racism. This is socialism or possibly anti-colonialism.”

Sorry, Rudy, but let’s not pretend there’s no history of racism against people who are only half black. It insults us both.

It is Rudy Giuliani’s third time as Asshole of the Day.

Mike Huckabee, Asshole of the Day for February 9, 2015

Last week President Obama spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast and continued his assertion, stated often, that ISIS and other Islamic terrorists do not represent their entire religion, and that evil done in the name of Islam is no different than evil that has been done in the name of Christianity, not just throughout world history, but specifically American history with regards to slavery and Jim Crow. Here’s what the president said:

Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ.

The facts of Christianity being used in service of those evils is 100% accurate, as Ta-Nehisi Coates goes at length to show.

But apparently bringing up facts is unforgivable. And, while many conservatives responded with crazy talk, it’s Mike Huckabee we’re highlighting today, for his was particularly ugly and he is running for president. Here’s Huckabee’s response:

“Everything he does is against what Christians stand for, and he’s against the Jews in Israel,” he said on “Fox and Friends.” “The one group of people that can know they have his undying, unfailing support would be the Muslim community. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the radical Muslim community or the more moderate Muslim community.”

Huckabee makes two assertions, both objectionable. So let’s take them in order:

#1 “Everything he does is against what Christians stand for.”

So which one of these things that Christians stand for does Obama act against?

  • Helping the poor?
  • Treating others the way he would like to be treated?

Or is it that in Mike Huckabee’s very narrow view of his own religion all that Christians stand for is persecuting gays and oppressing women?

Please recall that Obama is a professed Christian, and that during the 2008 election, members of Mike Huckabee’s party tried to make it unacceptable that Obama attended the Christian church run by Rev. Wright. Ring a bell?

#2 “The one group of people that can know they have his undying, unfailing support would be the Muslim community.”

Look, during his presidency Obama

  • Prioritized killing Bin Laden
  • Increased drone attacks against Islamic terrorists
  • Began bombing ISIS
  • Negotiated to keep Iran from getting nuclear weapons

That doesn’t sound like undying and unfailing support to me.

But Mike Huckabee doesn’t care about that. He expects the president of a constitutionally secular country will unconditionally put Christians above all others, and by Christians, those who hold the narrow view of the faith that Mike Huckabee has.

And even more than that, Mike Huckabee knows that this line of attack plays to the portion of American racists who believe Obama to be a secret Muslim. And for that, Mike Huckabee is the Asshole of the Day.

Ted Cruz, Asshole of the Day for November 10, 2014

by TeaPartyCat ()

President Obama spoke out today in favor of Net Neutrality, so of course Republicans must be against it, with Ted Cruz leading the way:

Now this is not an argument, but rather a collection of scare words. Obamacare added more government regulations to health insurance, along with many other things, so in some ways it was less free than before. People are no longer allowed to buy crappy insurance policies that still allow them to go bankrupt if they get sick.

But net neutrality is not restricting consumer choices– it is about preserving the internet as we currently know it– where there is one lane for everything, rather than ISPs like Comcast getting to choose which sites get to us fast or slow.

And beyond that it’s just silly to suggest, as Cruz does, that “the Internet should not operate at the speed of government”. The internet was created by the government 40 years ago. The internet was exclusively funded by the government for its first 20 years. The private sector did not create the internet. So pretending that it is only now that the government is intruding on the internet is just preposterous, just as it was preposterous for protesters in 2009-10 to hold up signs saying “KEEP GOVERNMENT OUT OF MY MEDICARE”, when of course Medicare is a government program that is even more socialist than Obamacare.  But Ted Cruz hopes his base of Obama-hating idiots don’t know that. And for that, he is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Ted Cruz’s 8th time as Asshole of the Day. Previous wins were for

And of course he was also named Asshole of the Day since winning 2013 Asshole of the Year.

Since the midterms there has been lots of nice talk about governing and the end of obstruction. It’s probably all lies, but we can’t prove it yet, so we’ll wait to name them asshole of the day until they don’t follow through.

But aside from the election, there’s still assholes, and one of the recurring themes here are those who find fault with both sides of something as long as Obama is on the other side.

Two years ago Glenn Beck and others were up in arms over high gas prices, with Glenn Beck claiming

“You change America. You change it by the behavior but you also are ‑‑ you’re radically changing everything we’ve ever believed. You’re changing us on what we can accomplish. If they get gasoline to be $5 and $6 a gallon, first of all, any time, any time you’ve had a spike in oil prices and a spike in gasoline, you have a recession or a depression because the market is not ‑ how are we built as a nation? How were we built? We were built with cheap energy. The reason why we could do things that others couldn’t is because we always had cheap energy. So the entire system is built around that. So once you have $5, $6 a gallon gasoline, the system no longer works. This is a ‘collapse the system’ strategy. It’s Cloward and Piven through energy, period,” Glenn said.

But today gas prices have dropped under $3.00. So does Glenn Beck praise Obama for loving America and preserving the cheap energy this country was built on? Of course not:

he is now warning that “this is actually not good for the United States of America” because lower oil prices will lead to destabilization in places like Saudi Arabia and Russia, which will lead to war.

“When you destabilize the world even more, it causes more problems,” Beck said, “and they will do what they have to do boost the prices around the world. We’re not far from war as it is and the economy is in real trouble here. When you have people like Saudi Arabia, unscrupulous, and Russia, totally unscrupulous, and they want their money, they’ll get  it”

Here we go again. There’s always something wrong with what Obama does, even when he does what Glenn Beck previously insisted on.

So, for criticizing Obama for both high gas prices and low gas prices, Glenn Beck is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Glenn Beck’s fifth time as Asshole of the Day. Previous wins were for

Ben Stein, Asshole of the Day for November 3, 2014

by TeaPartyCat ()

It’s a common refrain from Republicans that either

  • Racism no longer exists. It is a historical relic.
  • Racism does exist, but only black people are racists. White racism ended in 1964.

One favorite point to argue is that Obama is the first black president, so therefore racism can no longer exist. It sounds good until you realize that it is advanced by people who didn’t vote for Obama, hate him, but somehow think that a majority of Americans voting for Obama absolves ALL Americans of racism, even those still asking for Obama’s birth certificate. The fact that some white people voted for Obama doesn’t make Sean Hannity any more or less racist than he was before Obama’s election.

But it’s a new one to hear Ben Stein claim that Obama is the most racist president ever:

“What the White House is trying to do is racialize all politics and their especially trying to tell the Africa-American voter that the GOP is against letting them have a chance at a good life in this economy, and that’s just a complete lie,” he said. “I watch with fascination — with incredible fascination — all the stories about how the Democratic politicians, especially Hillary, are trying to whip up the African-American vote and say, ‘Oh the Republicans have policies against black people in terms of the economy.’ But there are no such policies.”

“It’s all a way to racialize voting in this country,” Stein continued. “This president is the most racist president there has ever been in America. He is purposely trying to use race to divide Americans.

Most racist president there has ever been in America. And keep in mind that 12 of our presidents owned slaves, 8 while in office. Some promised to free their slaves on their death, but then didn’t. Are none of those presidents more racist that Obama?

And 100 years ago President Woodrow Wilson brought southern style oppression of free blacks to Washington, DC. Segregating and denying good jobs to African Americans who had held them previously. Certainly any short list of most racist presidents would have to include Wilson.

But Ben Stein isn’t interested in an actual reckoning of racism in America. He’s just playing to privileged, conservative whites who want to feel free to cut any social program like food stamps that they perceive to be used more by non-whites, or to add poll taxes to limit voting by non-whites who can’t afford the extra time and cost to acquire the needed documents. Or who think it is right to limit (or ban) early voting on Sunday which is disproportionately used by African Americans after church. By pretending that whites aren’t racist any more, and that Obama and his party are racist for bringing up race, he tries to shift the conversation against the lingering evil of racism in this country, and thereby do nothing about it. He’s fine if African Americans continue to suffer discrimination and economic and political loss if it means Stein’s Republican party continues to hold power and influence. And for that, Ben Stein is Asshole of the Day.

It is Ben Stein’s first time being named Asshole of the Day.

John Boehner, Asshole of the Day for October 29, 2014

by TeaPartyCat ()

Back in 2012 Mitt Romney tried to make Obama seem misguided for not taking Israel’s side on everything no matter what. It seemed odd because Romney seemed to be saying that failure to follow Israel’s dictates was somehow unpatriotic for a US President. But that was 2 years ago.

Today John Boehner criticized the president on Israel and Iraq saying:

When the president discusses Israel and Iran, it is sometimes hard to tell who he thinks is America’s friend and who he thinks is America’s enemy.

Now a couple things are going on these days– Israel is openly criticizing and badmouthing the Obama administration and the US, and Iran is in talks with the US and others to give up their nuclear ambitions.

And of course it’s in Israel’s interest that Iran give up the potential for nuclear weapons, as Iran’s first target is often discussed as wiping Israel off the map. So Israel should want this to succeed. As should everyone. If we can get Iran to give up their weapons without a war, everyone is better off.

And getting Iran to negotiate to give up nukes takes diplomacy. You can’t just spend every waking moment talking like some John McCain bomb-first-ask-questions-later idiot. You have to be nice. You want them to keep on talking, not walk away in a huff. But John Boehner ignores all that, and that’s why he is the Asshole of the Day.

It is John Boehner’s 12th time being named Asshole of the Day.

Joni Ernst, Asshole of the Day for October 23, 2014

by TheDailyEdge ()

A disturbing video surfaced today featuring a gun-toting anti-government extremist ready to take up arms against the United States.

The video didn’t come from the Middle East. It came from Iowa. The extremist’s name is Joni Ernst. On the video she says: “I have a beautiful little Smith & Wesson, 9 millimeter, and it goes with me virtually everywhere… I believe in the right to defend myself and my family – whether it’s from an intruder, or whether it’s from the government, should they decide that my rights are no longer important.”

The scariest part of all: Joni Ernst wants to take her gun all the way to Washington DC. She’s a Koch-funded conservative with her sights set on becoming be a US Senator.

As Huffington Post reports: Ernst made the remark a little more than a month after gunman James Holmes allegedly killed 12 people and injured 58 in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado.

What exactly is Ernst afraid of?

Let’s review:

Six years after the election of America’s first black President, America is still being ravaged by gun violence, mass shootings and the death of unarmed citizens at the hands of the police we hire to “protect and serve us.”

Thanks to the GOP, the NRA and ALEC, gun laws are not getting tougher. In fact, thanks to the expansion of “Stand Your Ground” and similar laws it’s easier than ever to, quite literally, get away with murder.

Meanwhile, some people’s rights ARE under siege by elected officials–but it’s not Obama and the federal government doing it, these individual rights are being attacked by elected Republicans with the same kinds of extremist beliefs as Joni Ernst.

Republicans have decided the right to vote for minorities and young people is no longer important.

They’ve decided a woman’s constitutional right to reproductive freedom is not important.

Joni Ernst epitomizes the kind of extremist thinking that is leading us toward the very kind of government she is warning us against: she’s ready to take up arms against the government at the first sign that it might become illegal for a criminal to buy a gun one without undergoing a background check. But she’s totally comfortable deciding when other people’s rights (as in the rights of people she doesn’t agree with) are no longer important. For that, she is, for the first time, Asshole of the Day.

Keith Ablow, Asshole of the Day for October 17, 2014

by TeaPartyCat ()

Since Ebola is a bad thing, I guess it was only a matter of time before crazy racists started brainstorming for ways to blame Obama for it. They get pretty creative, though a lot of their criticism boils down to this, which I posted 2 months ago:

Leading the charge this week is Fox News’ go-to psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow, who goes full racist conspiracy on Obama:

Ablow started by explaining that from his perspective “as a psychiatrist,” Obama thinks he’s a “citizen and a leader of the world” who doesn’t belong to one country and “perhaps least of all this country because he has it in for us as disappointing people. People who’ve been a scourge on the face of the Earth. And so for him to then say we’re going to seal the borders and protect Americans when in my view, in his mind, if only unconsciously, he’s thinking, ‘Really? We’re going to prevent folks suffering with illnesses from coming across the border flying into our airports when we have visited a plague of colonialism that has devastated much of the world, on the world? What is the fairness in that?’ I believe Barack Obama is thinking.”

He continued, speculating that the president believes America shouldn’t be immune to Ebola when “others are suffering, when we are a bad people.”

…When asked why Obama wouldn’t impose a travel ban on flights from Africa, Ablow responded that Obama’s “affinities, his affiliations are with them. Not us. That’s what people seem unwilling to accept. He’s their leader … we don’t have a president.” He added: “We don’t have a president who has the American people as his primary interest.”

If this sounds familiar, it’s because Glenn Beck said something similar back in 2009:

“this president has exposed himself, I think, as a guy, over and over and over again, who has a deep-seated hatred for white people, or white culture.”

It’s sort of amazing really– that Obama doesn’t love America or care about American lives, and yet he somehow endured two grueling campaigns, years and years of racist, birther taunts, and all for what– a chance to make Americans die of the same diseases poor people around the world die of? That’s what he’s saying.

And he just knows this about Obama. He can peer into Obama’s America-hating soul. Or maybe not. Maybe he’s merely peering at Obama’s skin color. That would be my guess.

And that wasn’t the end of it either. After being criticized for this wild speculation about Obama as our Traitor-In-Chief, Ablow said today:

Fox Doc: Obama Won’t “Fully Defend” America Because “He Has It In For” Us

So, for saying Obama is happily letting Americans die of Ebola as part of some colonialism revenge scheme, along with a bunch of other racist, conspiratorial nonsense, Keith Ablow is Asshole of the Day.

It is Dr. Keith Ablow’s third time being named Asshole of the Day. Previous wins were for saying boys will be boys so girls shouldn’t wear leggings and saying gay marriage would allow polygamy and bestiality.

Allen West, Asshole of the Day for September 24, 2014

by TeaPartyCat ()

In case you didn’t know, President Obama destroyed America yesterday when he returned the salute of a soldier while carrying a latte. At least that’s what the conservative outrage mongers want you to think. Here’s the horrible video proving this, which the White House even posted, apparently unaware of the horribleness of the scandal:

And the usual suspects all got outraged by this, and leading the pack for most ridiculous is former congressman Allen West, who says:

If there was ever any doubt how this Commander in Chief really feels in his heart about our men and women in uniform, this should seal the deal. We have warriors engaged in harm’s way, and he does THIS? The latte salute. And he has the nerve to publish it on his Instagram account. Disgraceful.

Disgraceful.

Now it only took a short time for others to dig up times when another president was carrying something and returned a salute. Here’s one Media Matters posted:

Now if there’s any recorded outrage over Bush returning a salute while holding a dog, I’m unaware of it. But if anyone finds some, leave it in the comments and I will amend this post.

And if there’s outrage by Democrats or others in the media regarding Bush with the dog who are now silent on the latte salute, again, please tell me and I will amend this post.

But otherwise, please just stop being so ridiculously horrible. Stop pretending it’s the actions and manners of Obama that you object to, and just admit that you hate, hate, hate him with all your being, and that nothing he does will please you. Because this is getting old. You look ridiculous. You look like fools.

And stop kidding yourself– you have yet to drum up anyone not already a paid-up member of the Obama Haters Club to care about all your other scandals, so what’s the point here? Or is it that the audience at Fox News and Breitbart need their fix of outrage, like an addiction?

I’m sure I speak for many when I say I am just tired of your umbrella-gates and all the other pointless nitpicking. All you’ve convinced anyone outside your circle of is that you are petty, small people.

So, for acting like a salute with a coffee cup is the worst thing ever, while never saying a peep about a salute with a dog, Allen West is the Asshole of the Day.

It is Allen West’s third time as Asshole of the Day. Previous wins were for
